Mais la mort, et plus particulièrement la Révolution, les réuniront dans un mariage dont les failles sont devenues évidentes à tous un siècle plus tard, quand le comité Voltaire de 1878 a décidé d'écarter Rousseau des célébrations du centenaire. Notre colloque se propose d'examiner l'histoire de cette union étrange que les deux hommes auraient tout fait pour éviter. Les traces en sont innombrables, dans la culture populaire, dans la littérature, l'histoire, la politique, l'art graphique et décoratif, toute la nation se voit construite sur ces deux piliers indispensables des valeurs républicaines. Avec la séparation, puis le divorce, la situation s'inverse, et l'antagonisme fondamental entre les deux hommes est devenu un lieu commun dont la pertinence ne s'est pas affaiblie avec le temps. Attending to Early Modern Women, which has been held seven times at the University of Maryland since 1990, is moving to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, thanks to the generous support of the College of Letters and Science at UWM. The conference will retain its innovative format, using a workshop model for most of its sessions to promote dialogue, augmented by a keynote, and a plenary session on each of the four conference topics: communities, environments, exchanges, and pedagogies. Proposals are invited for twenty-minute papers and/or 3-4 person panels (in English or Irish) on any aspect of eighteenth-century Ireland, including its history, literature, language, and culture. There is no specific conference theme, but proposals for papers and panels addressing the following topics will be particularly welcome: Eighteenth-century Dublin (with the 2012 conference based in the heart of Dublin city centre, papers concerning any facet of Georgian Dublin, including, but not limited to, history, literature, architecture, and urban planning, are invited); The Irish Parliament (to mark the 230th anniversary of Irish legislative independence, papers addressing any aspect of the Irish parliament, its members, its activities, and its effect on Irish social, political, and cultural life are especially encouraged); Dublin City of Science (in July 2012, Dublin will host Europe's largest science conference, Euroscience Open Forum; in conjunction, science-related events and exhibitions are planned across Ireland in the months preceding the conference. To join in this celebration of Irish scientific endeavour, papers are invited on any aspect of the practice of scientific experimentation, enterprise and research in the long eighteenth century); The History of Jack Connor and Early Irish Fiction (as 2012 is the 260th anniversary of the publication of William Chaigneau's only novel, The History of Jack Connor (1752), papers are invited on any aspect of the text and its relationship to the development of Irish and British fiction. More widely, papers considering other examples of early Irish fiction, their contribution to the rise of the novel in eighteenth-century Britain, and their exploration (or lack thereof) of Irish life, are also welcome). Convenor: Serena Dyer. This day conference brings together academic and curatorial work on the desire to dress fashionably in the eighteenth century. From faces to feet, the fashionable men and women of the eighteenth century strove to achieve aesthetic perfection. This series of papers explores the process of fashion dissemination, production and consumption which enabled the fulfillment of these desires, and how this related to the concepts of desire, gender and beauty. The papers to be presented cover subjects such as cosmetics and beauty, fashion plates, silk manufacture and the relationship between dressmaker and client. A small exhibition of fashion plates and accessories from the period will accompany the conference. Plenary speakers: Dr Gregory Dart (University College London); Professor Robert Mankin (Université Paris-Diderot); Professor John T. Scott (University of California, Davis). The aim of this international conference, held in celebration of the tercentenary of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's birth, is twofold: first, to reassess the impact that Britain had on Rousseau's life and writing; and secondly, to examine the reception of Rousseau's works in Britain from the eighteenth century to the present day. It is well known that Rousseau spent a number of months in England in 1766-67, a stay dominated by his stormy relationship with David Hume. What is less well known is the extent to which Rousseau, even before then, was steeped in British culture, including its literature, its philosophy and its politics. Exactly how Rousseau engaged with British culture and the effect it had on his own intellectual development and output will be a key focus of this conference. The conference will also allow scholars to explore systematically the many ways in which Rousseau has been read, understood, appropriated and challenged by British writers, philosophers and political theorists from the eighteenth century to the present day. Possible topics for conference papers include, but are not limited to: Rousseau in Britain - travel and translation; Rousseau and the British press; Rousseau and the British Enlightenment; Rousseau and the Romantics; Rousseau and the Victorians; Rousseau - from Modernism to Postmodernism; Rousseau and British feminism; Rousseau and British nature-writing; Rousseau and the novel in Britain; Rousseau and British educational theory; Rousseau and British political theory. In what ways does commercial society use the book trade to promote its own system of values? [Appel à contributions (pdf)] • The Challenge of the Object / Die Herausforderung des Objekts. From July 15 to 20, 2012 the Germanisches Nationalmuseum is hosting the 33rd Congress of the International Committee of the History of Art in Nuremberg and invites art historians from all over the world to attend and discuss "The Challenge of the Object". The object and how it is perceived in art history is a question that is currently very highly charged, the result of increasing globalization and digitalization. Art and cultural historians from all over the world, from a vast cross-section of disciplines and fields of professional interest are called upon to discuss together the role and the theory of the object in art history. The topics are divided into 21 sections with up to 20 talks each. The sections should enable a comparison to be made between the different viewpoints and methods. For that reason they are categorized according to how their questions on the object in art history are formulated. This should allow talks on different genres, epochs and countries to be brought together. The congress will be rounded off with an extensive supporting program with excursions, for example to Documenta in Kassel, and a wide-ranging program for young academics. At the same time the Germanisches Nationalmuseum will be presenting the important special exhibition on "The Early Dürer". The Call for Papers ends on April 30, 2011. Hosted by the Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, Michigan, USA, Friday July 20th-Saturday July 21st, 2012. The conference'?s purpose is to support the scholarly investigation of inter-arts rivalry in all areas and media, and to highlight the benefits of a paragonising methodology in studies of the humanities. The conference will feature the examination of the paragone, or rivalry in artistic practice and its related fields. All disciplines and topics relevant to inter-arts rivalry will be considered, such as art history and visual culture, aesthetic theory, the history of iconoclasts/iconodules, literary theory and comparative literature, philosophy, critical theory, visual communications, cultural studies, and musicology, amongst others. Papers addressing pedagogical concerns relating to how student, commercial or theoretical competition impacts teaching of the arts will also be considered. The historical constitution of freemasonry; 2. The connections between western esotericism and the development of modern science; 3. La participation des jeunes au début de carrière sera favorisée. • Qing Encounters: Artistic Exchanges between China and the West, bilingual symposium (Chinese-English, with simultaneous translation), to be held on the campus of Peking University, October 10-13, 2012. The goal of the symposium is to highlight new ways of looking at the artistic contacts and mutual interactions between China and the West during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). By gathering scholars from around the world, it aims at bringing together different art histories as well as diverse methods of analyzing the artistic products of intercultural exchange. The symposium covers all forms of art, architecture, and decorative art. Special preference will be given to young scholars bringing a fresh methodological perspective to the subject. Satire has the ability to contest cultural boundaries in several ways. By addressing political topics or touching upon sensitive issues within a society (e.g. religious and sexual taboos), satirical works intervene in on going cultural debates. This is but one of the reasons why these works can be considered as interculturally charged. By mixing multiple media within one work, or by creatively transposing styles and techniques from one medium to another, satire shows that it can also contest medial boundaries, i.e. that it can be considered as intermedially charged as well. These two conditions, interculturality and intermediality, have framed the functioning of satire in the past and continue to do so in the present. They turn satire into a rather ambiguous phenomenon, for both its producers and its consumers. This assumed ambiguity of satire forms the point of departure of this conference. The organizers of this conference invite all potential contributors to submit a proposal of 200-250 words for a conference paper. Après les colloques milanais et genevois consacrés au projet pénal de Beccaria dans le contexte de la culture juridique des Lumières, nous vous proposons de penser la réception critique de Dei delitti e delle pene. Entre histoire des idées et des pratiques pénales, mais aussi tout autour de l'imaginaire de la peine juste, ce colloque associera des historiens, des juristes, des philosophes et des sociologues pour penser l'œuvre de Beccaria dans la durée de son héritage intellectuel sur les plans théoriques et pratiques. Il s'agira notamment de mesurer les adhésions et le scepticisme envers le réformateur milanais, précurseur du droit pénal moderne. On évaluera ainsi l'impact du projet beccarien dans la genèse (théorie, pratique) de la modernité pénale depuis la fin de l'Ancien Régime, jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
